What questions should I ask on a tour?

The process of finding the right place for your loved one can be overwhelming. While touring senior living communities, you want to absorb as much information as possible so you’re prepared to make an informed decision. Here is a list of some key questions to help you evaluate senior living communities:

⦁ What are the monthly fees?  What services are included in the monthly fee?

⦁ Is transportation provided? If so, is there an additional fee?

⦁ How many meals and snacks a day are provided?  How does the property handle special dietary needs?

⦁ What is the process in an emergency?  Who is notified? To which hospital are residents transported if there is a need?

⦁ What are the procedures for taking your loved one on an outing?  How are visits to the community handled? Can pets visit as well?

⦁ What activities are scheduled each week?

⦁  How does the food taste?

⦁ How is physical therapy managed in this community?

⦁ How often are housekeeping and laundry services provided?

⦁ Is there a physician that visits the property?

⦁ Are rooms furnished, or does the family provide furniture?

⦁ How do residents ask for help if they need it?  Are the staff members quick to respond?

⦁ What is the ratio of caregiver to residents?  Do residents have the same staff members each day? What about weekend staffing?

As you are touring, notice the interaction between the staff and the residents.  Do the residents appear happy, and at ease?  Notice the cleanliness of the facility, and the overall appearance of the facility and furnishings.

This is a very important decision, so ask questions of the staff until you feel satisfied that you understand all the options, policies, and benefits of the senior living communities that meet your criteria. Knowing the answers will make you feel confident in your final selection.
