Birmingham Senior Care Options
Finding a place for a parent or another loved one can be overwhelming. There are tons of options out there. It’s our job to know the best senior living communities in Birmingham and the surrounding areas. Here is a description of each type:
Independent Living
Independent living communities are designed for seniors 55+. Residents live in their own apartment or garden home, but have access to services such as meal preparation, housekeeping, activities, transportation, and more.
Independent living communities do not provide caregiving services, some may offer those services at an additional cost. The cost of independent living varies depending on amenities provided, location and apartment size. Some communities require an entry fee with monthly service fees, and others are a month to month lease.
Prices start at about $1,200/month for a studio.
Memory Care
Memory care communities- also known as Specialty Care Assisted Living Facilities or “SCALFs”- offer services similar to an assisted living environment, with the addition of secured entrances, added memory care services, and activities designed for those with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease or dementia.
There is a Registered Nurse present on-site 24/7 and they have a higher staff to resident ratio than a traditional assisted living community.
Nursing Home
Nursing homes, otherwise known as Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNFs), provide permanent custodial and medical care. These properties offer health professionals, nurses, meals + snacks, assistance with all activities of daily living, 24/7 care and more.
Many nursing homes also have special units for residents with dementia. Short term rehab stays are generally covered by Medicare or private insurance. Long term stays are prevelently covered by Medicaid.
The average cost per month for a private room is $7,440.
In-home care
In-home care services can include medical or non-medical custodial care. Non-medical home care is the most common and typically starts at about $20-25/hr. Caregivers come to the senior's home to help with activities of daily living and to provide companionship.
Medical home care provides nursing care at home for adults who have complex medical needs. Rates typically start at $40/hr. Home Health is a short term service provided with a physician’s order when a senior is in need of physical, speech or occupational therapy. Home Health is typically covered by Medicare or private insurance.
Assisted Living
Assisted Living is a great option for seniors who need assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs), such as bathing, grooming, dressing, ambulating, and toileting. You can be as independent as you would like to be in assisted living. Caregivers are present 24/7 to help as needed. Services include:
- 3 meals + snacks
- Assistance with ADLs
- Medication management
- Housekeeping and laundry
- Transportation to appointments
- 24 hour supervision
- Social activities
*Pricing: The cost of assisted living in Birmingham and surrounding areas can range from $1,800 per month to $7,000+ per month depending on location, apartment size and care needs.
